About this concept
Michigan statewide water monitoring dashboard · self-initiated design prototype
This is a high-fidelity working concept for a next-generation statewide water data dashboard: one user-centric surface for the public and for internal measurement staff, designed as a thin client over a HydroServer-style authoritative repository.
- ~1,100 monitoring sites rendered as a live GIS layer (data-driven styling) along Michigan's real river systems and Great Lakes shoreline.
- Time-series analytics per site: period-of-record context, % of climatological normal, Great Lakes levels vs. long-term average (IGLD 1985), hydro fleet output.
- Internal mode demonstrates the quality-control workflow: automated screening rules feed a review queue; approval publishes to the public view.
- API-first: every panel maps to an OGC SensorThings request (shown in each site's metadata), so the UI stays replaceable and the data authoritative.
Built as a portfolio exploration. The basemap is OpenStreetMap data served by CARTO, with a bundled Natural Earth fallback, and sites are placed along real river corridors and Great Lakes shoreline. All measurement data on this page is synthetic, generated to mimic Michigan hydrology: spring snowmelt, fall rains, hydropower operations, lake level cycles, and groundwater seasonality. No affiliation with any state agency.
